A highly-touted prep basketball star who has committed to Indiana has been arrested and charged with trafficking in cocaine in Kentucky.

Bud Mackey, 18, a 6-foot-4 guard, was arrested at about 5 p.m. Friday and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance within 1,000 yards of a school and first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (cocaine), first offense, according to officials at the Scott County jail in Georgetown, Ky. He was being held Friday night on a $10,000 cash bond.

"I'm just hoping and praying ... you hope it's not true," his coach, Billy Hicks, told the Lexington Herald-Leader. "You hope when it all shakes out there's a logical explanation."

Mackey led Scott County High School of Georgetown to the Kentucky state championship last season and was named most valuable player at the Sweet 16.

Hicks told the Herald-Leader that according to school officials, they went to look for Mackey when he didn't show up for a fifth-period English class and found him outside the building, smelling of marijuana. Police found cocaine in his possession, according to the report.

Hicks said he talked to Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson about the situation, according to the Herald-Leader. "He's floored," Hicks said.

Scott County Schools Superintendent Dallas Blankenship told the Herald-Leader the district would review disciplinary action, adding that Mackey had never been in trouble before at the school.
