BELLEVUE, Wash. (AP) -- Captaris Inc., which offers fax server and document delivery products and services, said Monday that its third-quarter earnings fell as software and hardware revenue declined, but still beat Wall Street estimates. For the quarter that ended Sept. 30, Captaris earned $486,000, or 2 cents per share, compared with $1.6 million, or 6 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter. The company's revenue declined year over year to $23.3 million from $24.6 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected a loss of a penny per share on $24.5 million in revenue. Captaris reported declines in its software and hardware revenue during the period. Higher maintenance support and services revenue as well as appliance revenue of $1.6 million from its recent acquisition of Castelle was not enough to offset the decline. The company's operating expenses rose to $17.9 million from $15.1 million, due mostly to increased research and development and selling and marketing expenses. Captaris shares rose 24 cents, or 5.2 percent, to $4.83 in morning trading. In the past year, the stock has traded between $3.96 and $9.09.
