CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) -- Microchip Technology Inc. on Monday offered preliminary second-quarter results below prior guidance. The semiconductor maker reported preliminary second-quarter earnings of about 35 cents per share, or about 38 cents per share on an adjusted basis. The company expects sales between $258 million and $259 million for the quarter. In July, the company predicted a second-quarter profit of 36 cents per share, or 39 cents per share on an adjusted basis. At the time, it predicted sales would be flat or rise up to 2 percent sequentially, which implied revenue of $264.1 million to $269.4 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expect earnings of 36 cents per share on revenue of $267.3 million for the quarter ended in September. Analysts generally exclude one-time charges and unusual items from their estimates. Microchip Technology said sales in its Americas and Asia regions were below expectations. Microchip Technology shares declined $1.85, or 5.1 percent, to $34.77 in after-hours trading. The stock earlier rose 12 cents to end regular trading at $36.62.
