NEW YORK (AP) -- A prosecutor who investigated the collapse of Enron Corp. was named interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, the Justice Department announced Friday. Benton J. Campbell replaces Roslynn R. Mauskopf, who was appointed to the federal bench in the Eastern District and confirmed by the Senate on Thursday. Campbell joined the Justice Department as an assistant U.S. attorney in 1994. He was a member of the prosecution team that investigated the collapse of Enron Corp. Campbell is a prosecutor in the Brooklyn-based eastern district, and also serves as acting chief of staff and principal deputy assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's criminal division in Washington, D.C. Campbell was formerly an associate at the law firm Kirkland & Ellis. He received his bachelor's degree from Yale University and his law degree from the University of Chicago Law School. Campbell officially takes over when Mauskopf assumes her new job as district court judge.
