NEW YORK (AP) -- Kroger Co. was among the stocks leading the Standard & Poor's 500 Index higher in midday trading Tuesday. The supermarket chain posted a 28 percent jump in profit for the second quarter. Shares of Kroger climbed $1.82, or 6.7 percent, to $28.84. Shares of Moody's Corp., a credit rating agency, jumped $3.15, or 7.4 percent, to $46.02. Another leader was Best Buy Co., a consumer electronics retailer whose shares leaped $1.90, or 4.3 percent, to $46.44. Best Buy reported a 15 percent increase in sales for the second quarter. In midday trading, the S&P 500 Index was up 9.93 to 1,486.58. Among stocks lagging on the index, shares of E-Trade Financial Corp. lost 88 cents, or 6.2 percent, to $13.33. The New York-based electronic brokerage reported steep costs to exit the mortgage business. Shares of Questar Corp., a natural gas company based in Salt Lake City, slipped $1.51, or 3 percent, to $48.89. Another laggard was Tenet Healthcare Corp. The Dallas-based health care company's shares fell 7 cents to $3.20.
