MEXICO CITY (AP) -- The Mexican unit of German car maker Volkswagen AG said Friday it plans to restart production at its factory in the central city of Puebla Monday. Work had been halted earlier this week due to a shortage of natural gas following attacks on gas pipelines. In a press release, Volkswagen de Mexico said it will restart production at 1:30 a.m. EDT Monday after idling its plant Sept. 10. The company said it plans to ramp up production to 1,780 vehicles a day during the course of next week. Volkswagen de Mexico produced 258,702 automobiles in the first eight months of the year. Several thousand manufacturers in central Mexico were forced to close factories and halt production this week after natural gas and oil pipelines owned by state-run oil monopoly Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, were destroyed by explosive charges early Monday. Pemex plans to resume natural gas supplies through its pipeline system starting late Sunday. The left-wing People's Revolutionary Army, which has claimed responsibility for the attacks, also claimed a series of pipeline bombings in July.
