GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) -- Regional freight railroad operator Genesee & Wyoming Inc. said Friday that its August traffic fell on declines in pulp and paper, farm and food, and metals traffic. Genesee & Wyoming hauled 70,328 carloads during the month, down 9 percent from 77,276 carloads in August 2006. Pulp and paper products fell 13 percent to 10,175 as a result of lower shipment volumes in the company's Oregon and southern regions. Farm and food products fell 21 percent to 6,747, as a result of lower grain shipments in the company's Australia region caused by drought conditions, Genesee & Wyoming said. Metals traffic fell 18 percent to 6,078, mainly as a result of an unplanned maintenance outage at a steel producing plant served by the company's Canada region. Same-railroad traffic fell 9.3 percent. Genesee & Wyoming shares fell 2 cents to $27.64 in aftermarket trading, after falling 12 cents to $27.66 in the regular session.
