What to Do When a Computer's Hard Drive Is Damaged by Flood or Fire

RANDOM NEWS

+-Text Size:

Even when a computer's hard drive is waterlogged in a flood or otherwise severely damaged, data recovery experts say they may be able to recover the data stored on it. Here's what to do before you talk to an expert:

-- Do not shake, disassemble or clean any hard drive or server that has been damaged. Improper handling can make recovery more difficult.

-- Never dry water-damaged devices by opening them or exposing them to heat, such as from a hair dryer.

-- Do not operate visibly damaged devices.

-- Do not use common software utility programs on broken or water-damaged devices.
