RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Eight Virginia counties have been declared primary federal agricultural disaster areas because of a lingering summer drought. Gov. Tim Kaine sought the disaster declaration from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Farmers in Bedford, Bland, Brunswick, Caroline, King George, Lancaster, Loudoun and Orange counties whose crops have been crippled by the drought are eligible for low-interest loans and other federal relief. The independent cities of Bedford and Lynchburg and 31 neighboring counties may also be eligible for some federal assistance. Requests are pending with the USDA to add more localities to the list of those included in the primary disaster area.
