LONDON (AP) -- Fashion retailer French Connection Group PLC said Tuesday that its first-half loss narrowed after the company boosted profitability in Asia. The net loss for the six months through July 31 narrowed to 1.9 million pounds ($3.86 million; 2.76 million euros) compared with 3.2 million pounds in the same period a year earlier, the company said in a statement. Still, sales slipped slightly to 109.4 million pounds ($221.1 million; 160 million euros) from 111.2 million pounds a year earlier. "Although progress in the second half of the year is likely to be impacted by the ongoing difficult trading conditions in the U.K., we are aiming to build momentum behind the successes seen in the first half," the company said. French Connection has in recent months suffered as customers have eschewed its clothes for similar brands. "Both Hong Kong and China are profitable while Japan improved its net result," the company said.
