SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- A man charged with assaulting a police officer by throwing a dart during a protest rally near the Pacific Rim leaders' summit at the weekend was denied bail on Monday. Gavin George Begbie, 40, appeared in Sydney's Central Local Court on 13 charges including assault, resisting arrest and being "armed with intent" to commit a crime. Begbie was one of 17 people arrested during a mostly peaceful march and rally by about 3,000 people Saturday during the annual summit of leaders from the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Sydney. At least two officers were injured during the demonstration, including one who was stabbed in the head by a dart. Police prosecutor Stuart Davis alleged that Begbie threw the dart at police in an unprovoked attack, then started swinging an iron bar that had been concealed in a newspaper he was carrying when officers went to arrest him. Magistrate John Bailey noted that Begbie had been dressed in coveralls, goggles, a helmet and a balaclava over his face when he was arrested, and "came onto the scene armed with items that he could use to assault the police." Bailey ordered that Begbie, who did not enter a plea, be held in custody until Oct. 15. Another man arrested on Saturday, Andrew Edward Pearson, 37, was granted bail on a charge of assaulting police and ordered to reappear on Nov. 19. Outside the court, organizers of Saturday's rally distanced themselves from Begbie. "It was one very isolated incident which had nothing to do with the majority of the peaceful protest," said Ian Rintoul, from the Stop The War Coalition, one of many groups that took part in Saturday's protest.
